Biography

Ward Ralph Waddle was born in West Zorra Township on May 2, 1917, the only child of Ray B. and Ruby M. Waddle but grew up in Tavistock where he helped his father in the hardware business. He enlisted for active service on May 1, 1941 in London, Ontario.   Ward received his training at Manning Pool, Toronto; Victoriaville, Quebec; Stanley, Nova Scotia; and Moncton, New Brunswick.  While at the later station he recreived his wings and sergeant's stripes on December 5, 1941.  He was posted overseas in February 1942 and in November of that year died when he was shot down over the Bay of Biscay.  According to letters received by his parents, Flight Sergeant Waddle was highly regarded by his fellow-officers.  The Squadron's Padre said that Ward had impressed him as a fine young man of stirling qualities and of Christian character.
