Biography

Joseph Howes served as a Colour Sergeant in the 97th Regiment, British Army in Colombo, Ceylon. He then volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Rifles as a Private on the condition that he received his Officer’s Pension for life. This was granted and he received his pension until the day he died. The family immigrated to Canada where he took part in the 1837 Rebellion rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. He and his family lived at Holiday where he was deputy Post Master.
