John Downing resided at Dickson’s Corners prior to enlisting in the war. He was a Private in the Highland Light Infantry, and his serial number was A104686. He was killed in action in France on Sunday July 9, 1944 at the age of 30. He is buried in Beny-Sur-Mur, Cemetery. His name is on the Cenotaph at the Zorra Township Office, and his name also is mentioned in the West Oxford Church Book.
